There are currently no confirmed cases of H1N1 (Swine) Flu in Angelina County. However, due to the concerns with and potential impacts of the flu, the City of Lufkin is closing all parks to large assemblies until May 11, 2009. As a local government with the responsibly to protect the public health and welfare we must err on the side of caution. The State of Texas has declared a health emergency and the City of Lufkin will take additional steps as the situation changes. The situation is very fluid and can change on a daily basis.

It is prudent that we maintain situational awareness and take the necessary steps to avoid the spread of the flu. Your local government officials are in contact with the State Department of Emergency Management and will provide additional updates if warranted.

1Avoid close contact.

Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.

If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.

3Cover your mouth and nose.

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.

4Clean your hands.

Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs.

5Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

6Practice other good health habits.

Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.
