Angelina County is seeking public comments and/or input from citizens and the community regarding the sheriff’s office grant request to the US Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs for award of a grant in the amount of $13,136.00 for the purchase of Taser devices. The grant amount is a set award assigned to Angelina County by the DOJ and is received annually by the sheriff’s office upon application. This grant is used to purchase Taser devices for Angelina County deputies. All deputies are certified for and receive training on the proper use of these devices, said use of which is controlled by department use of force policies. Deputies have Taser devices assigned to them but these devices fail from time to time and must be replaced. Some older units are due for upgrades to newer versions. These purchases, through this Grant, help to equip the sheriff’s office with equipment that is not directly paid for by county taxpayers and offsets the need for local funds to replace and upgrade these devices. This solicitation is a condition for applying for the Grant.
