The History Center

5The History Center is Located in Diboll, Texas, in Angelina County. It is deep in the heart of the beautiful East Texas pineywoods. The History Center is a new public history and archive center collect, preserve, and make available the history of our region for the educational use and benefit of present and future generations.
The History Center’s core mission, and holdings include:

  • And more than 200,000 Photographs

They also have exciting exhibits both inside and out that help interpret the Center’s growing collections as well as the area’s rich cultural and natural history.


Texas Forestry Musuem

The Texas Forestry Museum is located in Lufkin, Texas, in Angelina County. The Texas Forestry Museum is home to the story of the forests of Texas. The complexity of natural resource, the legacy of the industry, and the current and future role of forest management practices can be explored through three galleries, outdoor exhibits, and an Urban WildscapeTrail.


Museum of East Texas

The Museum of East Texas is located in Lufkin, Texas, in Angelina County. In 1972 – Seven women had a dream—a dream to transform the burned out shell of the former St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church into an arts and historical center for the children and families of East Texas. Since its inception in 1976, the Museum of East Texas has grown to become a dynamic cultural center. Housed in a historic 1905 church, the Museum contains an extensive collection of paintings and sculptures produced by East Texas artists as well as American, Latin American and European masters. The Museum offers a variety of public programs throughout the year and its commitment to visual arts education and cultural enrichment is the driving force behind all of its programs. Exhibitions, lectures, workshops, children’s events and fundraisers cover a wide range of interests and topics and are sure to appeal to everyone.


Genealogy Society

The Genealogy Society is Located in Lufkin, Texas in Angelina County. The Genealogy Society is an online service offering many records you can order online. They also house a large collection of literature, the John W. Wilkins Collection located in the Kurth Memorial Library in Lufkin, Texas. The Collection located in the Mcmullin room, has approximately 6000 books, microfilm, microfiche, U. S. Census and census indexes, and vertical files. More books are added every week. Every Texas county is represented in the collection as are most of the states from which Texans migrated.


Texas Historical Commission

The Texas Historical Commission is located in Austin, Texas. The Texas Historical Commission (THC) is the state agency for historic preservation. THC staff consults with citizens and organizations to preserve Texas’ architectural, archeological and cultural landmarks. The agency is recognized nationally for its preservations programs. The THC is composed of 17 citizen members appointed by the governor to staggered six-year terms. The agency employs about 100 people who work in various fields, including archeology, architecture, history, economic development, heritage, tourism, public administration and urban planning. The Texas State Legislature established the agency in 1953 as the Texas State Historical Survey Committee with the task to identify important historic sites across the state. The Texas Legislature changed the agency’s name to the Texas Historical Commission in 1973. Along with the name change cam more protective powers, an expanded leadership role and broader educational responsibilities.
